Although brides around the world are sure to copy Kate Middleton’s simply-styled wedding bouquet, others are stepping away from the traditional floral arrangement and using beautifully arranged vintage brooches and jewelry for their bridal bouquets.

Some brides choose to use family jewelry; others trek to antique or pawn shops to select their treasures. Some brooch bouquet artists will even find the jewelry for the bride.

The nice thing about brooch bouquets is that they can become heirlooms or be displayed long after the event. Or, the bride can choose to give the brooches as keepsakes to their family or bridesmaids.

Brooches are available in a wide variety of shapes and colors, from rhinestone bling to scatter pins that women used to pin to their sweaters, and flower pins. Dragonfly brooches are another popular style.

Ask the Expert: Summer Events That Are Fresh + Memorable

Q. Do you have any fresh ideas for planning a memorable event for a summer's evening?

A. Provided by Robbie Freund, Event Designer
Like no other season, summer graces us with an abundance of vibrant colors, fragrant flowers, fresh foods and glorious weather tailor-made to please the senses. Incorporating all these elements into your summer evening event is the key to making the night memorable.

For a recent evening cocktail reception at the Warwick Hotel in Denver, I integrated a variety of sensory elements to enhance the event and to make the evening pleasing for the guests on every level.

Sight-- Make the most of what you already have.
The Warwick features a spectacular view of the Denver city lights, so rather than compete with that vista, I kept the decor elegantly simple. The eye-catching outdoor pool became even more stunning with the addition of floating orange and turquosie battery-operated luminaries. Finally, because guests like to see what they're eating, I placed small, battery-operated spotlights on the buffet tables arranged so they illuminated the food.

Touch--Fabric plays a major role in event design.
This season, fabric texture is as important as color and layering. "Bold" and "expressive" dominate the current trend, while lighting adds interest and the illusion of texture to drapery.
To appeal to the tactile senses, I dressed the cocktail tables in summery linen of turquoise ribbon swirl taffeta. Each table was then crowned with centerpieces of deep orange tulips, peacock feathers and fiddlesticks in uplit clear cube vases that had been filled with turquoise beads to create a mosaic of textures.
The food tables were draped with turquoise ribbon swirl taffeta and topped with a sequin shimmer overlay, all inviting to touch.

Smell--A fragrant bouquet fo scents.
In addition to the mouthwatering aroma of delicious food, fresh flowers engage your guests' senses and heighten the enjoyment of the ambiance.
To create an exhilarating, earthy and yet delicate perfume, I placed a large centerpiece of deep orange roses, willow and monstera leaves on each of the food tables, the fragrances capturing the very essence of summer.

Taste--Succulent Summer Flavors.
No other season rivals summer for refreshing flavors that entice your guests' appetites.
For the Warwick event, I included a signature cocktail that incorporated a summery fruit flavor--the Classic Mango Martini.
The menu for table appetizers featured some favorite farmer's market ingredients, including Mini Brie Quesadillas with Fresh Fruit Salsa, Salmon Canapes, Grilled Figs with Prosciutto, and Savory Chicken Bites. The passed appetizers offer the same summer freshness with California Caponata on Assorted Crackers, Mini Black Bean, Corn and Shrimp Tacos, and Bruschetta Cups. Dessert Shooters topped off the evening, offering an array fo choices and flavors.

Sound--Set the Night to Music.
Music is one of the easiest ways to create a mood or even transport your guests to another time or place. For this particular event, a three-piece jazz ensemble provided background music while the guests mingled and reveled in the sensory pleasures of a lovely summer's evening.

Lockheed Space Systems Awards/
Loews Philadelphia Hotel
Client in San Franciso requested I help her produce her 2009 Lockheed Awards event to be held in Philadelphia. The event began with the reception being held in the Millennium Ballroom. I designed centerpieces of red roses, red dahlia and red hanging armathus in round brass vases. These were placed on cocktail tables dressed in gold satin linens with red silk, hand beaded overlays with silk screened gold borders and red silk tassels. Patterns of red roses were projected up on the ceiling to correlate with the red roses in the centerpieces. All of the columns and walls were highlighted in red. The performance stage was lit by a large gobo of the Liberty Bell. We had a Ben Franklin & Betsy Ross walk-around to greet the guests entering the reception area. Trio provided background music for the reception.

After the reception, guests were then lead by twenty five mummers, (Grand Prize winners for the 2009 New Year's Parade) upstairs to the Regency Ballroom for dinner and award presentations. Walls in the Regency Ballroom were uplit in bronze and tables were dressed in champagne satins, along with appliques of bronze and gold ribbons and sequins. The centerpieces consisted of Leonidis, Copper, Sahara roses, Mango and Chocolate Calla lilies placed in clear glass 24" round vases. We added bronze and gold beaded napkin rings to ivory napkins. Solo guitarist provided background music during dinner.

While guests were dining, we then took on the task of transforming the Millennium Ballroom, creating a dessert/dancing ambiance. We set up a lounge/seating area in place of the original registration area in the Millennium foyer and switched out the red silk overlays and red centerpieces in the original reception area of the Millennium Ballroom to gold sequin overlays and projected a gobo of the 'Philadelphia Skyline' over the main dessert table holding a matching ice sculpture of the 'Philadelphia Skyline'. All of the original red lighting in the room was switched out to gold and the red rose pattern on the ceiling was switched to moving gold dotted patterns to mirror the gold sequin overlays. We uplit the foyer in gold lights and added gold sequin pillows, matching the gold sequin overlays, to the lounge furniture. Live entertainment provided by Big Rick and his band.

We created full scale 'Zen Gardens' in the foyer/reception area, to include Koto musician, who later used Asian gong to chime guests to proceed to the Imperial Ballroom for dinner. Check out video to hear the Koto musician.

World Renowned Floral Designer Rene van Rems

An opportunity to work with floral designer, Rene van Rems, as he prepares decor and floral design for the upcoming fundraiser for Quail Botanical Gardens "Gala in the Gardens." The gala will be held on Saturday, September 12th at Quail Botancial Gardens in Encinitas, CA.

The dates for working together would be Friday, September 11 (two shifts/8am-2pm & 2pm -8pm) and also Saturday, September 12 (8am-4pm)
